So the big political news yesterday was that Michael Bloomberg, the current mayor of New York, is leaving the Republican party and becoming a Independent. Many speculate this is a precursor to a possible presidential bid as a third party candidate.
As I mentioned about a month back, I'm all for third party, fourth party, 22nd party presidential candidates. They should have the same platform as the Republicans and Democrats. Unfortunately for us, the American citizens, when such a candidate gets the people behind him, both major parties team up to try and shut him down.
If Bloomberg can channel the anger of the working class of this country, hell, there's no chance that he won't win. My expectations aren't that high. Let's say he wins the state of New York in the 2008 elections...and only takes New York, and the race between the Democrat and Republican is so close that neither could take the 270 electoral votes needed to win the election outright.
Then, you'd have a total free for all in the House Of Representatives, as the chore of picking a new president would fall on them. That, in turn, probably gets the people in enough of a frenzy that the Electoral College gets scrapped for just a straight popular vote process in the future...something I also think is long overdue.
The system as it is now...it needs to be changed. And it needed to be changed years ago.
